Emanuele Fontanini began traveling to European cities in the late eighteen hundreds, selling his figurines
in keeping with the old tradition.  In 1908, as a result of the experience gained during his travels, he
opened a small shop in Bagni di Lucca , the cradle of Italian figurine making.  He abandoned the plaster of
paris production and began producing papier mache' oscillating spiders.  Notable success moved him into
the production of toy soldiers and dollfaces.  His two sons, Aldo and Mario helped him expand his
operation into a small figurine factory.  Soon Fontanini began exporting nativities to the United States.  A
partnership with Roman, Inc in the early 1970's has made Fontanini the most popular nativities in American
for more than 30 years.

One hundred years of tradition and quality spanning four generations is what makes the Fontanini House
notable around the world.
